An ambush by the Boko Haram extremist group has left a grim toll on Niger’s military forces. Ten soldiers stationed near N’Guigmi in the southeastern Diffa region were killed in the predawn attack on Friday, local sources confirmed on Saturday.
The assault targeted a garrison town strategically positioned along the Lake Chad basin, a volatile region shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Since 2009, this area has become a hotspot for armed clashes involving Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Casualties and aftermath
A local resident, speaking under anonymity for safety reasons, reported that ten soldiers and four national guard members were killed during the raid. The attacker’s losses remain unconfirmed, but military sources indicated that counter-insurgency operations are underway to track down the perpetrators.
The Nigerien Press Agency later verified the incident, stating that the soldiers had died “defending their homeland with weapons in hand” during the assault. The regional governor, General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, presided over the burial ceremony for the fallen troops in N’Guigmi on Saturday.
Escalating violence in the Sahel
The attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram, whose insurgency has claimed thousands of lives in Nigeria’s northeastern states alone. The violence has since spilled into neighboring countries, including Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting regional military cooperation.
In response to earlier deadly incursions, Chad launched air and ground operations in mid-May, targeting Boko Haram hideouts on remote islands in Lake Chad, with support from Nigeria and Niger.
Niger continues to grapple with security challenges on its western flank, where Al-Qaeda and ISIS-affiliated groups have intensified attacks. The country has been under military leadership since July 2023, struggling to curb the rising tide of violence.
