In the early hours of Thursday, a deadly confrontation erupted near the headquarters of the Malian national broadcaster, ORTM, in Bamako. Two young men were fatally shot by military personnel tasked with securing the area. The incident occurred just before 5:30 a.m. in a district already under heavy surveillance.

According to military authorities, the two individuals, traveling on a motorcycle, allegedly attempted to breach security checkpoints surrounding the ORTM building. However, local accounts suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to a nearby construction site. Their presence in the restricted zone raised immediate questions about the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

Residents of Bamako have grown accustomed to the frequent security barriers and the strict measures enforced by the armed forces. Yet, the use of lethal force in this case has sparked mixed reactions across the city. Some defend the soldiers’ actions, emphasizing the need for decisive measures in high-risk areas.

Heightened security measures in Bamako

The checkpoints near ORTM were established following a surge in militant activity, including coordinated attacks by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) across seven locations in Mali, including Bamako. The military command has stated that the two men ignored warning shots after breaching the first checkpoint, leading to their fatal shooting.

One local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, defended the soldiers’ response, noting the risks associated with unauthorized entry into such zones. « Everyone knows the rules by now—no one should attempt to pass through these areas without authorization, especially during heightened alerts. Those stationed there acted within their rights. »

Questions linger over the fatal incident

Not everyone shares this perspective. Seyba, another resident, questioned why lethal force was used instead of alternative measures to disable the motorcycle or wound the individuals without killing them. « If the goal was to interrogate them, shooting to kill eliminates any chance of understanding their true motives. Even if they were suspects, we’ll never know what really happened. »

Local testimonies indicate the two victims were seasonal workers en route to their jobs, unaware of the strict access restrictions. Their deaths have left many in Bamako grappling with the consequences of a security strategy that prioritizes immediate action over de-escalation.

In response to the incident, security around the ORTM area has been further tightened. The same measures have been extended to military camps in the capital and the Senou International Airport, where access is now strictly limited to travelers and authorized personnel.
