DRC President Félix Tshisekedi joins Luanda peace summit in Angola

President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) arrived in Luanda, Angola, on July 16, 2026, at the invitation of Angolan counterpart João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço. The visit centers on the third edition of the global initiative “A Call for Peace: Ending Wars and Upholding International Law,” a high-level forum uniting heads of state, African Union leaders, UN representatives, religious figures, academic experts, and youth advocates.

Pushing for actionable peace commitments

The DRC delegation is using this platform to emphasize that peace must transition from rhetoric to measurable, verifiable actions. With the country currently holding the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council since July 1, 2026, Kinshasa is under heightened scrutiny to demonstrate leadership in crisis resolution and restore faith in multilateral diplomacy amid escalating global tensions.

Bilateral talks and regional security priorities

Before the summit’s formal sessions, President Tshisekedi and President Lourenço held a private meeting to discuss bilateral cooperation between their nations. A key agenda item was the volatile security situation in eastern DRC, where recurring instability threatens regional stability.

A summit focused on inclusive peacebuilding

Co-hosted by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and Angola’s government, the Luanda summit—running July 16–17, 2026—aims to advance peaceful conflict resolution. The event will spotlight the critical roles of women, youth, and sports in fostering sustainable peace and preventing future hostilities.
