In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the volatile region of Minembwe in South Kivu remains engulfed in relentless violence despite repeated calls for peace. Civilians bear the brunt of the crisis, facing daily airstrikes, drone attacks, and forced displacements that have shattered lives and livelihoods.
Government officials from both the DRC and Rwanda have reiterated their commitment to ending hostilities in Minembwe. Following a high-level meeting in London, both nations pledged to honor the June 2025 peace agreement, enforce a ceasefire, and mitigate tensions in the embattled territory. Yet, the fighting persists, casting doubt on the feasibility of these promises.
Healthcare under fire: a humanitarian crisis unfolds
The conflict has spared no sector, including critical infrastructure. Residents report that healthcare facilities—including Minembwe’s main referral hospital and local health centers—have been deliberately targeted. One local resident recounted the devastation: “The pediatric wing was bombed yesterday. Ilundu health center, near the airstrip, was also struck. Every day brings new attacks. Drones terrorize the population, forcing families to flee. The situation is dire—there’s no end to these assaults.”
Civilians caught in the crossfire: displacements and despair
The escalation of violence in recent weeks has triggered mass displacements, leaving communities stranded and vulnerable. Civil society leaders in South Kivu have condemned the unrelenting attacks on civilians, demanding strict adherence to ceasefire agreements. Hypocrate Marume, a spokesperson for the South Kivu civil society coordination body, emphasized the human toll: “We condemn the relentless targeting of civilians by warring factions. People continue to flee, and the crisis deepens. It is the people who are paying the price. As civil society, we urge both sides to lay down arms and negotiate for peace.”
Minembwe’s strategic significance fuels prolonged strife
The battle for Minembwe is not merely about territory—it is a high-stakes contest for control over a region of immense military and symbolic value. Professor Philippe Doudou Kaganda, a conflict analyst at the Great Lakes Peace Research Center, explains: “Minembwe is a vast territory that allows any occupying faction to launch counteroffensives, whether in the highlands or the Ruzizi plains. It serves as a crucial link to Mwenga territory and has been a flashpoint for decades. When a faction seizes control, it represents a territorial and ethnicized victory.”
The residents of Minembwe remain trapped in a nightmare of perpetual gunfire and drone strikes, with no respite in sight. As diplomatic efforts stall, the humanitarian fallout continues to mount, leaving communities in a state of perpetual uncertainty.
