The Gabonese Republic and the European Union convened their second high-level strategic partnership dialogue yesterday at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Palace in the Cité de la Démocratie. Led by Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault and EU Ambassador to Gabon Cécile Abadie, this session follows the initial round of discussions held in October 2024.
During the opening remarks, Mr. Immongault emphasized that the dialogue framework is anchored in the Cotonou Agreement successor, which governs relations between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific nations. He highlighted the agreement’s emphasis on forging a more balanced, action-driven partnership that prioritizes tangible outcomes in public policy and investment.
Key discussion pillars
The day-long discussions centered on four critical pillars:
- Political reforms and governance—reviewing institutional advancements during Gabon’s transitional period and addressing human rights and fundamental freedoms;
- Economic outlook—examining structural reforms, business climate enhancements, and investment attraction strategies;
- Environmental sustainability—aligning on forest management, sustainable fishing, clean energy, and waste reduction;
- Regional and multilateral cooperation—reinforcing shared stances on maritime security and regional integration.
The negotiations were described as exceptionally candid, with Mr. Immongault asserting that “no topic was off-limits” and that uncertainties were resolved through transparent exchanges. The parties underscored Gabon’s ongoing reforms and the Global Gateway initiative as pivotal to deepening economic ties.
On environmental matters, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable resource management, with particular focus on forest conservation and circular economy practices. The EU delegation also expressed keen interest in Gabon’s renewable energy transition and circular waste management models.
Concluding the session, Gabon and the EU reaffirmed their dedication to multilateralism and pledged to advance joint initiatives on mutually identified priorities. The atmosphere was described as one of mutual trust and openness, setting the stage for continued collaboration.
