Gabon refuses to accept migrants expelled by the US

The White House’s push to expedite the deportation of undocumented migrants has encountered an unexpected diplomatic roadblock in Central Africa. While the administration of former US President Donald Trump pursued bilateral agreements to facilitate the reception and transit of expelled migrants, Gabon has firmly rejected such a proposal.

In a bold diplomatic move, Libreville demonstrated its ability to prioritize national sovereignty over political or personal affinities. The country’s leader, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, made this stance clear in a candid interview, directly addressing Gabon’s relationship with Washington and the contentious issue.

« President Trump is someone I hold in high regard. However, we fundamentally disagree on the matter of accepting expelled migrants. Gabon will not sign this agreement—it simply does not align with our national interests. » he declared, emphasizing the country’s unwavering position.

National priorities take precedence

By declining to participate in the US-led scheme, Gabon sidestepped potential administrative and security burdens that could have strained its already stretched resources. The government is currently focused on domestic challenges, including political stability, economic recovery, and preparing for upcoming elections.

This firm refusal sends a strong message to Western allies: Gabon’s cooperation and diplomatic ties will never come at the cost of compromising its sovereignty or social cohesion.
