legal action launched against ousmane sonko over touba remarks

A group of Serigne Touba's descendants files legal complaint against Ousmane Sonko

A legal complaint has been filed with the Public Prosecutor at the Dakar High Court against Ousmane Sonko, current National Assembly President and leader of the PASTEF party. The complaint comes from a collective of Serigne Touba’s descendants, who are seeking an investigation into controversial statements made by Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters.

In his remarks, Sonko alleged that “dirty money entered the holy city of Touba,” a claim that has now triggered legal consequences. The complainants argue that these remarks have tarnished the reputation and dignity of Touba, a city deeply revered in Senegal.

The group, identifying themselves as Senegalese citizens, young intellectuals, and economic operators, also claim descent from the founder of Touba. They maintain that Sonko’s statements have seriously harmed both the city’s sacred image and the honor of its residents.

In their formal complaint, they demand that the Public Prosecutor initiate an investigation, summon Ousmane Sonko to clarify his remarks, and produce evidence supporting his claims. Additionally, they urge the authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry to determine the validity of these statements.

The complainants emphasize that their legal action is not merely personal but seeks to defend the integrity and sanctity of Touba, a city of immense spiritual significance in Senegal.
