The legal action initiated against Ousmane Sonko following contentious statements about the holy city of Touba remains fully in motion. Serigne Makhtar Bousso, serving as spokesperson for the complainants, affirmed this position during his formal hearing this Tuesday before investigators of the Sûreté Urbaine.
Religious leaders pursue legal accountability
This judicial proceeding stems from an official complaint filed with the public prosecutor on July 14, 2026, by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso. Both initiators, who identify as grandsons of the venerable Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, have challenged remarks delivered by the President of the National Assembly during a political gathering.
The grievance centres on an address delivered during the inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in Mbacké. During this event, Ousmane Sonko allegedly asserted that illicit financial resources had found their way into the holy enclave of Touba.
Defending the reputation of Touba
The plaintiffs maintain that such declarations severely damage the standing, dignity, and moral integrity of Touba. Founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the sanctuary is anchored in strict ethical codes, religious dedication, and spiritual uprightness.
Consequently, the complainants demand that Ousmane Sonko publicly clarify the exact meaning of his allegations and provide tangible evidence to substantiate them. Reaffirming this stance before investigators, Serigne Makhtar Bousso stressed the absolute necessity for total transparency regarding any claims directed at the sacred city.
