Protest banner unfurled by Lens fans targets PSG president in Ligue 1 clash
Supporters of RC Lens made their displeasure known early in Wednesday’s rescheduled Ligue 1 fixture against Paris Saint-Germain by displaying a provocative message aimed at club president Nasser al-Khelaïfi.
The banner, which read « Nasser kills Ligue 1 », was deployed shortly after kick-off at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, sending a clear signal to al-Khelaïfi and the French football hierarchy about the frustrations felt by rival clubs’ followers.
Lens fans have long voiced concerns over the financial dominance of PSG and its alleged impact on competitive balance in French football. The protest underscores growing tensions between traditional clubs and the capital side, particularly regarding revenue distribution and squad spending power.
Despite the symbolic gesture, the match proceeded with both teams battling for crucial points in the league standings. Lens, fighting to secure a top-half finish, welcomed a PSG side already crowned champions for the season.
The incident adds to a season marked by debates over financial fairness in Ligue 1, with smaller clubs questioning the long-term sustainability of a league increasingly skewed by the financial might of its wealthiest member.
