The captain of Olympique Lyonnais Femenin, Wendie Renard, admitted that the four-goal margin against Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final did not capture the essence of the match. Speaking after the 4-0 defeat, she emphasized that while the scoreline was decisive, it failed to reflect the competitive nature of the encounter.
Renard stated: «The score is heavy, but in my view, it doesn’t reflect the true picture of the match at all. Barcelona were efficient, and credit to them—they are world-class players. Finals bring teams to an equal level, and at crucial moments, they capitalized on chances while we missed ours. That’s why we were punished.»
The Lyon captain acknowledged Barcelona’s killer instinct in front of goal, contrasting it with her team’s missed opportunities. «From the third goal onwards, it was a different story. We pushed forward, but Barcelona countered effectively. It’s football—sometimes you learn the hard way. We must take this experience, analyze our mistakes, and use it as motivation to improve.»
