Mali drone strikes kill at least 10 civilians at wedding celebration

In a tragic turn of events, at least ten civilians, primarily young individuals, were killed in a drone strike carried out by the Malian army in the village of Téné, located in the San region of central Mali. The attack occurred on Sunday as villagers were preparing to celebrate a traditional collective wedding, an important cultural event for the community.

The Mali army confirmed the involvement of its drones in the strike, which targeted a procession of motorcycles following one another through the area. The strikes come at a time when Mali faces an increasingly critical security situation, compounded by coordinated attacks on April 25 and 26 by armed groups, including the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated organization, and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a predominantly Tuareg rebel group.

Local residents expressed their shock and grief over the incident. “Ten of our children were killed by airstrikes of unknown origin,” a resident told reporters under anonymity. “What was meant to be a day of joy turned into unbearable sorrow.”

According to a security source who also requested anonymity, the drone strikes were launched while villagers were organizing the second edition of a traditional collective wedding, a significant cultural event for the community. The source stated that the procession of motorcycles, which was moving through the area, likely drew the attention of the drones.

The aftermath of the attack left the community in mourning. “A wedding was supposed to take place, but instead, at least ten civilians were killed,” a local official confirmed. “This is a tragedy that has shattered our hearts.”

The incident adds to the growing concerns about the escalating violence in the Sahel region, particularly in Mali, where the military government continues to face challenges in maintaining security and stability. The drone strikes have raised questions about the army’s operations and the unintended consequences of military action in civilian areas.
