The United States Treasury Department initiated sanctions this Tuesday, June 2, 2026, against John Imani Nzenze, a pivotal figure within the RDF/M23 war machinery. Nzenze, identified as the intelligence chief for the rebel movement, which receives support from Kigali, has been implicated in nearly three decades of terror, plunder, and widespread displacement of populations across the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Although considered overdue, this sanction holds significant symbolic weight, targeting a central orchestrator of a military system notorious for its devastating impact.

John Imani Nzenze is recognized as a seasoned participant in the aggressive conflicts waged against Congo since the late 1990s. These hostilities were often disguised as manufactured rebellions, covertly financed and directed by Paul Kagame’s government in Rwanda.
