Mali urged to lift ban on jeune afrique magazine

The Union of Journalists of the Free African Press (UJPLA) has voiced strong condemnation and deep concern over the Malian authorities’ decision to ban the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine across the country.

According to the UJPLA, this move represents a serious violation of press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access pluralistic, unbiased, and independent information.

Jeune Afrique is a well-established pan-African publication that has played a pivotal role in fostering democratic debate and providing insightful analysis of political, economic, and social issues across the continent for decades. The magazine’s prohibition sets a dangerous precedent and reflects an authoritarian trend that contradicts Mali’s international human rights commitments.

The UJPLA emphasizes that press freedom is not a privilege granted by authorities but an inalienable right enshrined in international conventions, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

UJPLA’s Demands and Calls to Action

In response to this decision, the UJPLA is taking a firm stance by:

  • Firmly condemning the arbitrary ban as a regressive step backward for democracy;
  • Demanding the immediate reversal of the sales prohibition on Jeune Afrique in Mali;
  • Urging Malian authorities to adopt a transparent and dialogical approach that respects fundamental freedoms;
  • Appealing to human rights and press freedom organizations to mobilize against this oppressive measure.

The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists throughout Africa.
