Médecins sans frontières urges global fund to prioritize north kivu malaria efforts

Democratic Republic of Congo: MSF calls on the Global Fund to maintain North Kivu as a malaria priority

RDC: MSF appelle le Fonds mondial à maintenir le Nord-Kivu dans ses priorités concernant le paludisme

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has voiced significant apprehension regarding a potential future reduction in funding, fearing it could further exacerbate the already fragile health situation in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. This vital region has endured a protracted humanitarian crisis for several years, with ongoing supply challenges severely impacting its healthcare infrastructure.

Stéphane Doyon, a program manager for MSF France, elaborated on the organization’s deep concern.

“Our worry stems from the fact that if North Kivu is removed from the Global Fund’s projects, the majority of treatments currently reaching health centers not supplied by MSF – those originating from the Global Fund – would simply cease to arrive. At Médecins Sans Frontières, we are not in a position to substitute for the Global Fund across an entire province. Should this occur, the situation would become exceptionally critical,” Doyon explained.

Malaria stands as the leading cause of consultations observed in our health facilities. For us, the absolute priority is to reintegrate malaria support for North Kivu province, which is severely impacted and currently represents one of the most critical health zones. In North Kivu, we witness outbreaks of measles and cholera. The population has been profoundly scarred by conflict and is in urgent need of external assistance,” Stéphane Doyon, MSF France program manager, emphasized.
