Morocco and us forge strategic multi-domain military center in tan-tan

The AMTEC facility, strategically located in Tan-Tan, is set to be structured around three core components: a Multi-Domain Training Area (MDTA), a Drone Academy (MTDA), and an Innovation and Experimentation Center. This ambitious initiative aims to significantly enhance military capabilities by integrating cutting-edge technologies and fostering seamless interoperability among African and Western allies.

General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR), affirmed Morocco’s strong position to swiftly realize this vision. He emphasized that the nation’s existing robust infrastructure and highly skilled human capital facilitate a rapid transition from conceptual design to operational deployment. General Berrid further highlighted Morocco’s potential as a dependable industrial partner for the United States.

Delving deeper, the MDTA will provide an advanced training ground, enabling forces to prepare for intricate operations across diverse environments, including the full electromagnetic spectrum. Concurrently, the Drone Academy is poised to educate African operators in small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS) technologies, with a specific focus on counter-terrorism efforts across West Africa.

The third pillar, the Innovation Center, is envisioned as a dynamic laboratory for developing operational solutions. It will facilitate the rapid testing of emerging technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications. A key emphasis will be placed on creating cost-effective and scalable solutions, specifically tailored to the unique operational realities of the African continent.

Beyond its immediate military implications, this ambitious project also unlocks significant economic and technological opportunities. It anticipates the active involvement of industrial and academic stakeholders, fostering a vibrant innovation ecosystem centered on defense technologies. AMTEC is set to become a crucial testing ground for future wireless and detection technologies, simultaneously contributing to development in remote areas.

General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, hailed this initiative as “a major opportunity for both American and African defense industrial bases, as well as academic institutions, to innovate and develop solutions tailored to emerging challenges.”

The first tangible demonstration of this vision is anticipated during the African Lion 2027 exercise, which will serve as a critical proof of concept for the forthcoming center. This annual exercise, consistently hosted in Morocco, already functions as a large-scale operational laboratory for integrating advanced technologies under real-world conditions.
