Morocco joins Mediterranean Union parliamentary assembly leadership

Rabat strengthens its role in the Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean by securing a seat on its Bureau and taking charge of the Artificial Intelligence Commission, marking a new phase in its parliamentary diplomacy.

Morocco’s parliamentary delegation played a pivotal role in the 10th Summit of Presidents of Parliaments and the 19th plenary session of the Union for the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (AP-UpM), held over the weekend in Egypt’s new administrative capital.

Led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice-President of the Chamber of Representatives, the delegation worked to solidify Morocco’s influence within the AP-UpM’s decision-making bodies. During the Bureau and expanded Bureau meetings, delegates approved the new AP-UpM Bureau composition for 2026-2030 and the leadership of permanent commissions.

New responsibilities for Morocco in a key Mediterranean institution

In a significant development, Morocco secured a seat on the AP-UpM Bureau and was entrusted with chairing the Artificial Intelligence Commission. This recognition underscores the confidence placed in Morocco’s parliamentary diplomacy and its growing stature within this Euro-Mediterranean framework.

Fassi Fihri emphasized during the plenary session that the AP-UpM remains a vital platform for deepening dialogue and cooperation between parliaments on both sides of the Mediterranean. He highlighted how the selected themes—artificial intelligence, youth engagement, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect the collective awareness of a region undergoing profound transformation. This evolution extends beyond technological change to encompass shifts in cultural dynamics, influence mechanisms, and decision-making processes.

Morocco’s strategic vision aligns with Mediterranean priorities

Fassi Fihri noted that under the guidance of King Mohammed VI, Morocco is advancing a modernization agenda focused on economic diversification, digital transformation, and infrastructure development. This strategy positions knowledge-based economy as a cornerstone for sustainable growth, enhanced competitiveness, and Morocco’s role as a reliable partner in the Mediterranean, Africa, and globally.

The Moroccan delegation, including Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, actively participated in commission meetings, contributing to discussions on parliamentary diplomacy, AI governance, youth inclusion in decision-making, and collective security and development challenges.

The session concluded with a call to maintain robust parliamentary coordination among member states and to reinforce the AP-UpM’s role as a trust-building platform dedicated to security, stability, sustainable development, and shared prosperity across the Mediterranean.
