Mountaga Tall’s son disappears amid political unrest in Mali
Tensions escalate in Mali as the whereabouts of Cheick Mamadou Tall, the eldest son of prominent opposition figure Mountaga Tall, remain unknown. His disappearance follows the abduction of his father, a high-profile critic of the military regime, on May 2.

The Mountaga Tall family’s legal team revealed that Cheick Mamadou Tall was reported missing on May 16, 2026, shortly after receiving a phone call. This distressing development comes on the heels of Mountaga Tall’s own abduction by masked individuals, which has sparked widespread concern about his safety.
Political tensions fueling disappearances
Mountaga Tall, a vocal critic of the military junta, has been at the forefront of legal battles against the regime’s crackdown on dissent. His legal practice includes defending detained military personnel accused of attempting to destabilize state institutions. Additionally, he has challenged the junta’s controversial decision to dissolve political parties, further intensifying his conflict with the authorities.
The M5 movement, of which Tall was a key figure, played a pivotal role in the 2020 ousting of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. Initially collaborating with the military leadership, Tall later distanced himself from the junta, becoming one of its most outspoken opponents.
Calls for immediate action
In a joint statement, Tall’s legal representatives condemned the abduction of both father and son, labeling the incidents as illegal acts. They urged judicial and administrative authorities to take swift action to secure the release of both individuals and ensure transparency in the investigation.
The timing of these events is particularly alarming, occurring just days after a deadly attack on April 25 by jihadist groups, including the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), allied with Al-Qaeda, and rebel factions from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) targeting military positions.
