New Zealand’s World Cup 2026 dream hinges on Belgium clash
New Zealand’s head coach Darren Bazeley refused to concede defeat after his side’s latest World Cup 2026 performance, insisting his team remains one victory away from scripting history. “We know we must beat Belgium on Friday,” he emphasized during a post-match press briefing. “A single win could secure our place in the round of 16.”
The All Whites’ coach acknowledged Belgium’s formidable reputation but struck an optimistic tone. “They’re a strong side, but if we can replicate our best displays from the Iran (2-2) and Egypt encounters, we’ll have a real chance. We’re clear about our objective: defeat Belgium.”
The narrow loss to Egypt left Bazeley visibly frustrated. “We had that match in our grasp. It stings to walk away empty-handed. The first half was exceptional—we controlled possession and dictated play comfortably. The second half saw us unable to maintain our intensity. Egypt raised their game, played brilliantly, and punished our lapses.”
“At halftime, we were content with our performance, though we never declared victory prematurely. We struggled against some aerial threats and quick transitions,” he explained, referencing the moment Egypt turned the tables. “The disappointment is palpable. Watching another team celebrate on our patch is heartbreaking. We led in both our opening fixtures and created clear chances. Converting those opportunities is crucial. In tight contests, anything can transpire when the scoreline is level on goals.”
