The Kingdom of Morocco has significantly bolstered its strategic influence within the African Union since its historic reintegration in 2017. Through extensive regional consultations across North Africa, the country has secured multiple high-level positions across key AU bodies and committees. This evolving dynamic underscores Morocco’s growing role in continental governance, highlighting its unwavering commitment to the Union’s core priorities—from institutional reforms to economic integration and sustainable development solutions.
At the forefront of elective roles in its subregion, Morocco has clinched nine influential positions. Among these, the Kingdom will serve as vice-president of the ministerial committee overseeing African candidacies in global systems. Additionally, it will assume the vice-presidency of the contributions bureau, a critical entity responsible for evaluating member states’ financial quotas.
In specialized technical committees—essential for shaping shared policies—Morocco will participate in the justice and legal affairs committee, as well as the economic development, tourism, trade, industry, and mining committee. Complementing these roles, the Kingdom has been appointed vice-president of the permanent representatives’ bureau for institutional reforms and will chair the subcommittee on environmental matters. Its engagement extends further to the subcommittee dedicated to human rights, democracy, and governance.
“This robust representation is further evidenced by Morocco’s election as a member of the African Centre for Migration Studies and Research board, enabling Moroccan experts to actively shape its initiatives,” highlights official statements. This strategic positioning reflects the trust placed in King Mohammed VI’s leadership, whose migration policy emphasizes humanitarian solidarity and shared responsibility. The nine high-profile roles solidify Morocco’s dynamic influence and sustained contribution to the AU’s operational framework.
The Kingdom’s official reintegration into the AU on January 30, 2017—after a 33-year hiatus following its 1984 withdrawal from the Organisation of African Unity—marked a decisive shift from isolation to engagement. This move unlocked significant diplomatic victories, particularly in advancing the territorial integrity dossier. Morocco’s diplomacy transitioned from a reactive stance to proactive leadership, effectively neutralizing adversarial maneuvers within AU corridors.
“This pragmatic approach grants Morocco a vital platform to champion its fundamental interests,” officials note. The bold diplomatic strategy of recent years has fostered seamless reintegration and accelerated the signing of strategic bilateral agreements with numerous African nations, paving the way for deeper economic cooperation and continental cohesion.
