Gabon’s mining sector drives economic transformation after oil decline

As Gabon’s oil production gradually declines, the nation is prioritizing economic diversification with a bold new focus on its mining industry. By 2030, authorities plan to launch eight new mining projects, aiming to shift the country’s economic foundations away from hydrocarbons and toward sustainable mineral wealth.

New mining frontiers to reshape Gabon’s economy

The Minister of Mines, Sosthène Nguema Nguema, recently highlighted several high-potential projects in various stages of development. Key initiatives include iron ore ventures at Milingui, Baniaka, Mébaga and M’Bilan, a promising gold project near Etéké, and an upcoming potash extraction operation. These developments signal a strategic pivot toward minerals that have long remained underexploited.

By accelerating mining activities, the government aims to elevate the sector’s contribution to the national GDP from 6% today to nearly 20% in the coming years. This expansion is expected to generate thousands of jobs and substantially boost public revenue, strengthening Gabon’s economic resilience.

Infrastructure upgrades critical to mining ambitions

Economist Orphée Mouelé underscores that the success of these mining projects hinges on critical infrastructure upgrades. He emphasizes the urgent need to modernize road and rail networks, enhance port facilities, and expand energy supply. These improvements are vital to lowering logistics costs and streamlining the transport of extracted minerals to global markets.

Ensuring inclusive benefits from mining growth

Civil society groups are calling for transparent and equitable distribution of mining profits. The organization Éthique et Bonne Gouvernance stresses that economic progress must translate into tangible improvements in local communities. They advocate for policies that ensure mining revenue supports sustainable social development, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure in mining regions.

Local processing aims to boost economic value

Gabon is also prioritizing local processing of extracted minerals to maximize economic returns. By developing a domestic mining industry, the country seeks to increase the value of its exports and reduce reliance on volatile oil revenues. This strategy aligns with broader efforts to build a diversified, self-sustaining economy that benefits all citizens.
