Nearly a dozen Nigerien troops lost their lives in a brutal dawn attack by Boko Haram insurgents near the strategically vital town of N’Guigmi, situated in the Diffa region of southeastern Niger. The assault, which unfolded on Friday morning, targeted a military outpost just outside the city, leaving the local security apparatus reeling.
N’Guigmi: a hotbed of extremist activity
N’Guigmi, a garrison town perched on the edge of Lake Chad, has long been a flashpoint for militant violence. Since 2009, the sprawling wetlands and borderlands between Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad have become a haven for both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP). The region’s porous terrain and sparse military presence have repeatedly exposed it to coordinated strikes by armed groups.
Casualties mount as military responds
A local resident, speaking under condition of anonymity, confirmed the grim toll: “At least ten soldiers were killed in the ambush, with several attackers also falling in the crossfire. Military units are currently conducting sweep operations to track down remaining insurgents.”
Social media reports from affected communities corroborated the attack’s severity, citing “ten soldiers and four National Guard members” among the fatalities. While official channels have yet to release an updated casualty count, state media acknowledged the loss of life in an attack attributed to Boko Haram operatives operating in N’Guigmi’s outskirts.
