Ol requests Ligue 1 match postponement ahead of champions league playoffs

Olympique Lyonnais seeks postponement of first Ligue 1 fixture, LFP declines

Olympique Lyonnais has formally requested the French Professional Football League (LFP) to postpone their opening Ligue 1 match against Toulouse FC, scheduled for August 22nd, in the event of Champions League playoff qualification. The club’s leadership argued that the timing would allow their squad to prepare optimally between domestic and European commitments.

The Rhone-side club, under manager Paulo Fonseca, resumed training on June 29th with the primary objective of reaching the Champions League playoffs. The third qualifying round is set for August 4th or 5th (first leg) and August 11th (second leg). Success there would see Lyon face the playoffs, potentially scheduled within the following fortnight.

In their formal request to the LFP, Lyon’s management emphasized that the postponement request was contingent solely on Champions League qualification. They drew parallels with Paris Saint-Germain’s successful appeals for fixture adjustments last season, citing the broader interests of French football as justification for their case.

LFP delivers a firm refusal

The LFP’s administrative council, convening via videoconference on Monday evening, unanimously rejected Lyon’s request. A key argument against the postponement was the impracticality of creating a scheduling gap in Ligue 1’s opening weekend, particularly as Ligue 1+ now broadcasts all matches.

Implications for Lyon’s season

With training underway and Champions League ambitions clear, Lyon now faces the challenge of balancing domestic and European priorities. The club’s leadership maintains that the original request was made with the utmost consideration for competitive integrity and player welfare.
