Olympiques lyonnais seeks ligue 1 fixture delay for european aspirations

Olympique Lyonnais is determined to maximize its prospects for a coveted spot in the Champions League, prompting the club to formally request a deferral of its inaugural Ligue 1 encounter.

Lyon’s management has communicated with the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), submitting an official plea for the postponement of their away game against Toulouse, originally scheduled for August 22. This request, however, is contingent upon the team advancing to the Champions League playoff rounds. The fixture’s timing is critical, as it would fall precisely between the two legs of a potential European playoff, a pivotal moment for the club’s continental ambitions.

European qualification: a top priority

To ensure optimal preparation, OL commenced training as early as June 29, specifically targeting the third preliminary round of the Champions League, set for August 4 or 5 and August 11. Should they successfully navigate this stage, Paulo Fonseca’s squad would then face the crucial playoff matches just days later.

In justifying their appeal, Lyon invoked the concept of “the superior interest of French football,” an argument previously utilized by Paris Saint-Germain in a similar scenario last season. The LFP is now expected to render its decision on this application within the coming days. A favorable ruling would allow OL to approach a potential two-legged European confrontation under the most advantageous conditions.
