Ousmane sonko calls for updated communal emergency plans to combat floods

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko addressed the crucial issue of flood prevention and management during the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. He began by commending the preparatory work undertaken by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, alongside other state services. This foundational work includes vital actions such as clearing drainage networks, thoroughly inspecting existing water infrastructure, strategically pre-positioning pumps, and developing comprehensive emergency response plans.

Emphasizing the inherently inter-ministerial nature of effective flood mitigation, Ousmane Sonko urged all government departments to operate in perfect synergy. This collaborative effort will be coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with significant support from the Ministry of Interior, particularly concerning civil protection aspects and overall crisis management.

The head of government subsequently issued precise instructions to the relevant ministers, mandating the immediate implementation of appropriate measures. These directives include the updating and formal validation of all municipal emergency plans, verifying the operational readiness of early warning systems, and ensuring clear communication channels with the affected populations. Furthermore, Prime Minister Sonko called for the strategic pre-positioning of intervention resources and the organization of a comprehensive inter-ministerial simulation exercise, which must be conducted before June 15, 2026.
