Ousmane Sonko’s governance in Sénégal: the collapse of a messianic image

Ousmane Sonko face au miroir du pouvoir : L'illusion du Messie s'effondre (Maïmouna Sène, membre du secrétariat exécutif national de l'APR)
For many years, Ousmane Sonko embodied the promise of radical change in Sénégal, positioning himself as the providential figure, the “Messiah” destined to sweep away outdated political practices.

However, after two years at the helm of the state and government, the assessment is clear: the fiery rhetoric of yesterday’s opposition leader has shattered against the harsh realities of governance.

Two years of governance: a legacy of inaction

Effective governance demands more than impassioned speeches. After twenty-four months in power, the promised systemic transformations remain largely unmaterialized. Plagued by economic uncertainties, a notable absence of significant structural reforms, and stagnant social indicators, the Sonko government presents a strikingly barren record.

Where the populace anticipated concrete solutions for purchasing power, youth employment, and economic revitalization, they have instead found a reactive, short-sighted approach to management.

This demonstrated managerial inadequacy underscores a critical point: eloquence in speech does not equate to competence in handling state affairs.

The role of Prime Minister has proven far too demanding for someone who seemingly believed leading a nation was merely about campaign slogans.

Double standards and ethical compromise

Beyond economic shortcomings, the most profound disappointment lies in the realm of ethics.

Ousmane Sonko, whose popularity was built on pledges of public life moralization and a complete break from past practices, appears to have swiftly adopted the very behaviors he once vehemently condemned.

Nepotism, undue favors, and a lack of transparency have regrettably become hallmarks of his administration. By elevating dogmatism to a governing principle, he has sacrificed the Republic’s fundamental values for partisan interests, deeply disillusioning a youth that had placed its trust in his integrity.

The National Assembly maneuver: a disregard for the Constitution

The culmination of this concerning trajectory is undoubtedly his approach to the National Assembly. By imposing a contentious institutional framework, Ousmane Sonko has embarked on a path that numerous legal scholars and observers unequivocally label as unconstitutional.

Attempting to bend the foundational texts of the Republic to consolidate authority or circumvent parliamentary oversight is characteristic of authoritarian regimes, not democratic leaders.

This blatant disregard for the laws of the Republic ultimately strips the man of his perceived sanctity.

Sénégal has no need for messianic figures or self-proclaimed prophets.

Power has acted as a stark revealer, exposing Ousmane Sonko’s technical limitations and moral inconsistencies.

Today, confronting a record devoid of tangible results and highly questionable institutional practices, the myth has crumbled.

It is imperative for citizens to confront this reality and judge the individual not on what he promised to be, but on what he has demonstrably failed to achieve.

The political history of Sénégal will record that Ousmane Sonko was not the solution, but rather a dead end. The populace now has irrefutable evidence that there is no Messiah on the horizon, only a politician adept at mass manipulation but utterly overwhelmed by the complexities of power. The era of complacency is over. In the face of flagrant incompetence, ethical betrayal, and constitutional overreach, the moment calls for republican resistance and political clarity.
