Political funds controversy: Guy Marius Sagna exposes Ousmane Sonko’s allocations

The recent disclosure by Guy Marius Sagna, a deputy from Pastef, has ignited a fresh debate in Senegal regarding the management of political funds. According to his statements, former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko received 1.7 billion F CFA in allocated funds during his tenure—amounts he claims were disbursed without institutional oversight.

Unregulated funds: a systemic issue in Senegalese politics

While Guy Marius Sagna acknowledges that the law permits such allocations, he emphasizes that these funds operate outside formal scrutiny. His remarks come amid broader concerns about financial transparency in the country’s political sphere. Notably, he also highlighted that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye reportedly controls over 8 billion F CFA, distributed across political funds, secret accounts, special reserves, and sovereign wealth funds—none of which, he argues, are subject to public or institutional accountability.

Contradictions fueling political tensions

The revelation has intensified scrutiny of the Pastef party’s stance on financial governance. Guy Marius Sagna criticized what he describes as a “breach of trust” by President Faye, particularly given Sonko’s public advocacy for stricter regulation of political funds—a position he reportedly championed while in opposition. “This is the sorcery of some politicians,” Sagna remarked on social media, questioning the credibility of leaders who benefit from unchecked financial resources while publicly endorsing transparency.

The debate underscores growing public skepticism toward political accountability in Senegal, where the allocation and management of state funds remain a contentious issue.
