Against a backdrop of escalating challenges facing the African continent, the President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, held a pivotal meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the African Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee. The discussions centered on concrete proposals to enhance the efficacy and alignment of UPA initiatives with broader continental objectives.
During the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA) Executive Committee, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, welcomed Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the UPA Executive Committee, for a high-level meeting on June 4.
The talks addressed the operational frameworks, organizational priorities, and strategic reforms required to strengthen the UPA’s role in shaping continental governance. With Africa navigating complex geopolitical and economic pressures, the meeting highlighted the need for institutional cohesion across African parliamentary bodies.
Sonko’s Vision for a Stronger UPA
Ousmane Sonko outlined a series of reform proposals aimed at revitalizing the UPA’s institutional framework. A key focus was the call for structural adjustments to amplify the Union’s influence on critical policy and governance decisions across Africa. Sonko emphasized that such reforms could solidify the UPA’s leadership in driving continental unity and policy coherence.
The National Assembly Speaker also underscored the importance of aligning UPA recommendations with those of the African Union to eliminate duplication and enhance collective impact. By fostering greater synergy between these institutions, Sonko argued, Africa could achieve more cohesive and effective policy outcomes.
This strategic engagement took place within the context of the 85th UPA Executive Committee session, an event dedicated to reinforcing inter-parliamentary collaboration across the continent.
