In Senegal, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed Ousmane Diagne as the new President of the Constitutional Council, effective July 13. The announcement follows a decree confirming Diagne’s elevation to this prestigious judicial position, succeeding the late Mamadou Badio Camara.
This development comes on the heels of a landmark ruling by the high court regarding Senegal’s constitutional reform, which was adopted by the National Assembly. The decision marks a significant milestone for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who had sought the Council’s validation for the reform.
However, the outcome stands in contrast to the expectations of the Pastef party, led by Ousmane Sonko, which had championed the constitutional changes. For the party, the ruling represents a setback in their reform agenda.
As Senegal’s highest constitutional authority, the Council’s responsibilities include reviewing the constitutionality of laws, adjudicating electoral disputes, and ensuring the integrity of elections.
