Senegal political tensions erupt over justice minister appointment

Tensions are rising in Senegal following the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as the new Minister of Justice, with opposition leader Ousmane Sonko voicing strong reservations about the move. Sonko, head of the Pastef party, has raised concerns that the selection of Sarr for the critical role of Garde des Sceaux may signal deeper issues for his political movement.

The newly formed government has barely settled into its roles before the first wave of criticism strikes, with the Ministry of Justice at the center of the controversy. Sonko argues that Sarr’s involvement in past judicial cases—particularly those tied to tensions between Pastef and certain courts—raises red flags about his ability to remain impartial in his new position.

« The lineup for the Ministry of Justice does not inspire confidence,» Sonko stated in a public address. « This individual has been deeply entangled in cases that have strained relations between our party and the judiciary.» While he acknowledged the need to observe Sarr’s actions before drawing final conclusions, his skepticism remains palpable. « We harbor doubts, but we will assess his performance. And we will act accordingly from the National Assembly,» he added, signaling that Pastef intends to closely monitor the ministry’s decisions.

Scrutiny extends to the Prime Minister

Sonko’s criticism does not stop at the Justice Minister. He has also taken aim at Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, questioning the latter’s commitment to a technocratic approach. Sonko insists that Lô, despite being presented as a technocrat, has strayed into political maneuvering—a role that, in his view, undermines the government’s efficiency.

« I urge the Prime Minister to adhere strictly to his technocratic mandate,» Sonko declared. « He was chosen for his expertise, not his political acumen. If he stays within his lane, we won’t have issues. But if he provokes us, he should be prepared for the consequences.»

Sonko’s warning hints at a brewing power struggle, with insinuations that he possesses insider knowledge of the Prime Minister’s actions. « I am aware of many things regarding his decisions,» he stated, emphasizing that his restraint thus far stems from courtesy rather than weakness.

Internal party discipline under scrutiny

The political fallout extends beyond the government’s ranks. Sonko has also rebuked several Pastef members who joined the executive branch, accusing them of acting without party consensus. Among those named are Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé, all of whom accepted ministerial positions despite the party’s stated opposition to such alliances.

« Anyone who has taken a seat in this government did so on their own accord,» Sonko asserted. « The time will come when we address their actions individually.»

These early skirmishes paint a picture of a government facing immediate challenges, with the Ministry of Justice’s appointment serving as the catalyst for broader political unease. While Sonko reserves final judgment, his tone suggests that Pastef will not hesitate to challenge the new administration’s decisions if they perceive missteps.
