Ousmane Sonko’s cautious stance on 2029 presidential race

In a recent interview, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party and President of Senegal’s National Assembly, addressed growing speculation about his potential candidacy in the 2029 presidential election. When questioned directly about whether he would run regardless of circumstances, Sonko adopted a measured tone, emphasizing the premature nature of such discussions.

« We are still far from that stage, » Sonko stated, underscoring that his party, Pastef, would ultimately decide its candidate through its internal processes. « There are many initiatives suggesting Ousmane Sonko will run in 2029, but I prefer to wait for the right moment. My party will back the candidate it chooses, and we are not there yet. »

The opposition leader also clarified his position regarding outgoing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who took office in April 2024. Sonko made it clear that he would not interfere in the president’s potential re-election plans. « He has his own path to follow, just as I have mine, » Sonko explained. « I won’t speculate about the president’s possible candidacy—whether now or in the future. »

This firm yet diplomatic response reflects Sonko’s strategic approach to navigating Senegal’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2029 election.
