President Faye to establish independent political force in Senegal
Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to launch his own political party, signaling a definitive split from his former ally Ousmane Sonko and the ruling Pastef movement. The move follows months of escalating tensions between the two leaders.
The transition will be overseen by Aminata Touré, Senior Advisor to the President, who has been tasked with forming a dedicated working group. This initiative comes as Faye distances himself from the party he once co-founded, which Sonko continues to lead.
Political fractures deepen as Senegal faces economic challenges
Recent months have seen growing discontent within Senegalese political circles, compounded by the aftermath of a hidden debt scandal that emerged from the previous administration. The fallout has intensified scrutiny of governance practices and fueled public skepticism toward established political structures.
With the 2027 local elections looming, both Faye and Sonko are positioning themselves for a critical showdown. The upcoming vote will serve as a litmus test for their respective support bases across the country, particularly in light of their now-irreconcilable differences.
The president’s decision to establish an independent party underscores a broader shift in Senegal’s political landscape, as new alliances and rivalries reshape the path forward for the nation’s democracy.
