Chad secures major urban development opportunities at Baku global forum

The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development and Housing presented the outcomes of Chad’s official delegation to the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Azerbaijan, during a debriefing session held at the ministry. The meeting brought together key stakeholders who participated in the mission, including representatives from the mayor’s office of N’Djamena, officials from the National Housing Corporation (SOPROFIM), and members of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (ONU-Habitat).

Urban resilience and sustainable city planning take center stage

The delegation’s participation focused on critical urban development challenges such as affordable housing, sustainable city growth, and climate resilience strategies for urban areas. By engaging in high-level discussions with international partners, Chad positioned itself as an active voice in shaping Africa’s urban future.

A dedicated Chad exhibition stand showcased the country’s most promising urban development initiatives, offering visitors a firsthand look at national efforts in habitat improvement and city planning.

New partnerships and funding unlock urban development potential

Following productive discussions with representatives from Kenya and Morocco, Chad is advancing towards new cooperation agreements in affordable housing, informal settlement upgrading, and climate-resilient urban infrastructure. These partnerships are expected to lead to joint technical missions and knowledge exchanges in the coming months.

An important milestone was the announcement of an upcoming official visit by the Executive Director of ONU-Habitat to Chad from September 9 to 11, 2026. During this mission, she will assess the country’s urban realities and evaluate multiple urban development proposals submitted by national authorities.

Chad’s delegation also secured a place among the top ten eligible countries for the United Nations Green Climate Fund, supported by Kenya’s advocacy. This new status grants access to substantial funding opportunities, particularly for urban resilience projects targeting flood mitigation and climate adaptation in cities.

Transforming opportunities into action for urban communities

According to the Minister, the mission’s outcomes represent a turning point for Chad’s urban development trajectory. By leveraging these international partnerships and funding mechanisms, the country is well-positioned to implement transformative projects that will directly benefit urban populations, especially those most vulnerable to housing insecurity and climate risks.

The government reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and resilient urban growth, in alignment with the President’s vision for national development.
