The swift political rebound of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko demonstrates his resilience and popular mandate, as he assumes the presidency of Senegal’s National Assembly with a pledge to avoid institutional chaos.

Addressing journalists in Dakar on Tuesday, Sonko emphasized that a change in leadership does not equate to political disgrace. His combative tone revealed his determination to assert legislative oversight while maintaining a constructive dialogue with the executive branch.

In a carefully worded statement, Sonko ruled out personal vendettas or legislative gridlock, instead framing his new role as an opportunity to exercise rigorous scrutiny over government actions. He reserved the right to deploy all available checks and balances in cases of policy disagreements.

A cohabitation without precedent

Political analysts describe the emerging dynamic between Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as an unprecedented cohabitation. Ellimane Haby Kane, director of the Legs Africa think tank, notes that while Sonko projects diplomatic restraint, his true objective is to consolidate influence over the executive branch.

The tension stems from the president’s failure to consult the Pastef party—Sonko’s movement—before appointing the prime minister and cabinet members. This oversight has already triggered negotiations, with Pastef issuing a statement outlining conditions for potential government participation.
