Russia-Chad cooperation highlighted on Russian national day

N’Djaména — The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Chad marked Russia Day this month, spotlighting the steady expansion of bilateral ties between Moscow and N’Djaména across education, security and governance.

Diplomatic momentum builds between Moscow and N’Djaména

During the ceremony in the Chadian capital, Ambassador Vladimir Sokolenko underscored that the partnership between Russia and Chad rests on solid foundations of mutual trust and equitable cooperation, designed to serve the long-term interests of both nations.

He noted that the Chadian leadership’s commitment to social progress and enhanced national sovereignty has fostered a positive climate for bilateral dialogue. Moscow welcomed these policy directions and confirmed an invitation from President Vladimir Putin to Chadian leader Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno for the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow this October. The invitation follows the head-of-state visit to Russia in January 2024 and signals a clear intent to further deepen high-level engagement.

Recent high-level exchanges strengthen ties

In June 2024, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the first visit to N’Djaména in six decades, holding wide-ranging talks with senior Chadian officials. Last September, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly anniversary, Lavrov met Chadian State Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Chadians Abroad Dr Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul to review priority areas for cooperation. Both sides agreed to maintain regular high-level consultations.

Diplomatic coordination continues under the updated 2024 protocol on political consultations, finalized during the second Russia-Africa ministerial conference in Sochi. Together, Russia and Chad are championing African interests at the UN, particularly in discussions on reforming the Security Council to ensure fairer representation and decision-making for African states.

The two countries reaffirmed support for UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ May call for sweeping reform of the international system. « Africa’s enormous potential remains constrained by an unjust global order. That must change, » Guterres said, urging a system that grants Africa the voice, resources and representation it has long been denied.

Security and capacity-building initiatives advance

Russia applauds Chad’s leadership in regional conflict resolution and its support for peacekeeping operations. In May, six Chadian police officers began advanced training in Russia under a UN peacekeeping module, strengthening Chad’s contribution to regional stability efforts.

Both nations are advocating for new security architectures and deeper cooperation in Central Africa and the Sahel, prioritizing region-specific solutions over external interventions.

Economic and educational cooperation take center stage

Moscow has endorsed N’Djaména’s proposals within the African Union to diversify regional payment systems and explore alternatives to the CFA franc, signaling a shared vision for monetary sovereignty.

The most visible area of collaboration remains human capital development. Russia currently offers Chad one of the largest annual scholarship quotas—360 full scholarships—under the « Professionalization » program, which combines vocational training with production hubs for international students. Russian and Chadian ministries of vocational education are now negotiating improvements to the recruitment process to make the program even more beneficial for Chadian youth and to increase the national quota.

A shared future rooted in mutual respect

The event concluded with a reaffirmation that Russia-Chad relations exemplify balanced, mutually advantageous cooperation rooted in respect for each side’s priorities. Officials from Chad’s foreign ministry, diplomatic corps and national administration attended the ceremony, reflecting the broad support for these efforts.

Observed annually since 1990, Russia Day commemorates the start of democratic renewal in modern Russia—a milestone in the country’s thousand-year history.
