mounting concerns in Mali as mountaga tall’s son disappears following father’s abduction
Actus. A profound sense of unease is spreading across Mali following the recent disappearance of both prominent opposition figure and respected lawyer, Mountaga Tall, and his eldest son, Cheick Mamadou Tall. Their legal representatives have issued a strong statement, demanding their immediate release and condemning these actions as “illegal” within the highly charged political landscape currently overseen by the military government in Mali.
A second disappearance rocks Mali after Mountaga Tall’s abduction
According to the family’s legal counsel, Cheick Mamadou Tall has been missing since May 16, shortly after receiving a telephone call. This alarming incident occurred just two weeks after his father, Mountaga Tall, was forcibly taken on May 2 in Bamako. The family of Mountaga Tall has consistently maintained that the prominent lawyer was seized by masked individuals. Since these events, there has been no official communication regarding his whereabouts or the specific circumstances surrounding his abduction in the West African nation.
A vocal critic of Mali’s military leadership
Mountaga Tall, a former influential member of the M5 movement which played a key role in the ousting of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in 2020, initially supported the military’s ascent to power. However, he subsequently emerged as one of their most outspoken critics. Notably, the lawyer has been actively defending several military personnel accused of “attempting to destabilize institutions” and was also challenging the transitional authorities’ decision to dissolve political parties through legal channels in Mali.
Escalating political tensions in the Sahel region
These troubling disappearances unfold against a backdrop of a precarious security and political climate in Mali. In late April, a series of attacks, claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), targeted several strategic positions held by the military regime. In light of this deteriorating situation, the Tall family’s lawyers are urgently appealing to both administrative and judicial authorities to “mobilize all efforts” to locate both men and to shed full light on the circumstances of their disappearance, crucial for stability in Sahel politics.
