Dakar — In a landmark session on Monday, the President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, hailed the recently adopted constitutional reform as a monumental step forward for Senegalese democracy and public sector transparency. The sweeping changes, endorsed by the majority parliamentary group, are set to redefine governance in the country.
The historic vote on the constitutional amendment bill (proposition de loi nº17/2026) marks the culmination of a meticulous legislative process spearheaded by deputies from the Pastef-Les patriotes coalition. Speaking to the nation, Sonko emphasized the reform’s transformative potential, stating that it would “usher in an era of unparalleled democratic refinement and institutional clarity.”
Following the parliamentary approval, Sonko announced the swift transmission of the bill to the President for final endorsement. “No extraordinary measures are required,” he asserted, pointing to the unanimous validation by the Constitutional Council, whose rulings are binding across all branches of government. “This reform is a testament to our collective commitment to democratic principles and administrative integrity,” he added.
Sonko also reflected on the reform’s long and complex journey, noting that its core amendments had evolved through years of political engagement and national dialogue. “This isn’t just a legislative achievement—it’s the realization of a vision shared by countless citizens and stakeholders,” he remarked. While acknowledging the importance of political discourse, he clarified that the process had transcended mere dialogue to become a structured, institutional reality.
The reform’s alignment with the outcomes of a broad political dialogue—including participation from Pastef-Les patriotes and a diverse array of political and civic organizations—was a point of pride for Sonko. He praised the deputies behind the initiative, calling their work a “model of legislative excellence.”
Addressing his own commitment to transparency, Sonko confirmed he would submit an updated asset declaration within the week, following the mandatory three-month window post-government departure. “As a former Prime Minister, I’ve already declared my assets. Now, I’m fulfilling this duty with the same rigor,” he stated.
