Amidst mounting pressure from the Coalition Article 64 (C64), a unified platform of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (RDC) main opposition forces, President Félix Tshisekedi has called for a fresh parliamentary deliberation on a controversial law. This legislation outlines the framework for organizing a constitutional reform referendum, a subject that has sparked intense political debate.
The C64, which emerged in May, contends that this proposed law, actively promoted by the presidential party since 2024, is strategically designed to enable President Tshisekedi to pursue a forbidden third term. The RDC’s 2006 Constitution explicitly restricts presidential mandates, making any attempt to alter this provision a significant point of contention.
