Senegal’s president dismisses PM Ousmane Sonko, dissolves cabinet

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has terminated the mandate of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, announced on Friday, May 22, 2026, through decree number 2026-128. This decisive move has led to the automatic dissolution of the entire government, marking a significant shift in Senegal’s political landscape.

A directive has been issued to outgoing ministers to handle current affairs until the formation of a new administration. At this point, no timeline has been disclosed regarding the appointment of a successor to lead the government.

The decision underscores the escalating rift between the Head of State and the former Prime Minister, once close allies within the Pastef movement. Their previously aligned positions have gradually diverged, becoming increasingly visible in public discourse over recent months.
