Senegal’s prime minister challenges president over political funds management

In a rare public confrontation at the National Assembly, Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko openly criticized the President’s handling of political funds. Speaking before lawmakers during a session of urgent questions, Sonko declared his disagreement with the head of state, calling the approach a « critical mistake » in the management of public resources.

The Prime Minister emphasized that transparency in financial matters had been a cornerstone of his political movement’s agenda for over a decade. « Since 2014, we have consistently raised concerns about unchecked political funds. Our 2019 manifesto included this demand, and it remained unchanged in 2024 », he stated, underscoring the urgency of reform.

Calls for stricter oversight, not abolition

Contrary to speculation suggesting a complete elimination of political funding, Sonko clarified that his intention was never to abolish these resources. Instead, he advocated for a robust oversight mechanism—inspired by systems in place in France—to ensure accountability. « We have never proposed removing these funds entirely. What we demand is strict control over their use », he asserted, stressing the need for legal frameworks that prevent misuse.

The Prime Minister also dismissed rumors of diverting these funds to the Prime Minister’s office. He pointed out that his administration already manages a dedicated fund exceeding one billion West African CFA francs, reinforcing the argument that oversight, not centralization, is the solution. « The real issue is governance and public trust. Citizens deserve clarity on how every franc is spent », he added.

Public perception and the fight against corruption

Addressing concerns about widespread perceptions that these funds are used to « buy loyalty », Sonko insisted that every franc allocated to political activities must be subject to rigorous scrutiny. « No financial transaction should escape accountability. Transparency is non-negotiable », he declared, signaling a firm stance against opaque financial practices.

The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect growing tensions between Senegal’s executive and legislative branches over fiscal responsibility. As the debate intensifies, the government faces mounting pressure to align political funding with democratic principles of accountability and integrity.
