Senegal’s parliamentary leader pushes for african union reform

Senegal’s National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko met this Thursday with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge during the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) executive committee.
This meeting centered on discussions about the APU’s missions, organizational structure, and strategies to enhance its effectiveness amid continental challenges spanning political, economic, and institutional domains.
Strengthening African parliamentary institutions
The Senegalese leader proposed concrete reforms to revitalize the APU, emphasizing the need to improve its operational efficiency and amplify its influence on shaping Africa’s key political directions.

Sonko also advocated for greater alignment between APU recommendations and those of the African Union. He argued that such synergy would bolster the coherence and complementarity of Africa’s continental institutions in addressing shared challenges.

The meeting reflects a growing commitment among African parliamentary leaders to foster more integrated and effective governance structures that serve the continent’s nations and citizens.
