Tragic incident on Lake Chad: Nigerian fishermen killed in Chadian airstrikes
An unfolding tragedy on Lake Chad has left numerous Nigerian fishermen presumed dead following airstrikes conducted by the Chadian military against jihadist positions. Multiple testimonies gathered on Sunday confirm the devastating impact of these operations.
Chadian military targets Boko Haram strongholds
Since Friday, Chadian fighter jets have been conducting airstrikes on islands in Lake Chad under the control of Boko Haram, particularly near the borders of Nigeria, Niger, and Chad. These operations were reportedly launched in retaliation for a recent attack by Boko Haram on Chadian forces. The strikes specifically targeted Shuwa Island, identified as a major jihadist bastion and a vital fishing hub where Nigerian fishermen operate.
Fishermen caught in the crossfire
A representative of the Lake Chad Fishermen’s Union has reported that at least 40 Nigerian fishermen are missing and likely drowned during the bombings. Adamu Haladu, a fisherman from Baga in northeastern Nigeria, confirmed the loss of lives, stating, “Many people have been killed.” Most of the victims hailed from Doron Baga and Taraba State in Nigeria. Witnesses explain that fishermen had been permitted to access these fish-rich areas after paying a fee demanded by Boko Haram.
A region plagued by insecurity
Lake Chad, shared by Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, has been a haven for jihadist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) for over 15 years. In 2015, neighboring countries launched a multinational joint force to combat this threat. However, regional cooperation has weakened in recent years, particularly after Niger withdrew from the alliance in 2025. As of now, the Chadian military has not issued an official statement regarding these claims.
