Us ambassador in Rabat honors Sahara maroccan elected officials

During a special gathering in Rabat, the United States Ambassador to Morocco, Richard Duke Buchan III, extended his appreciation to elected representatives from the Moroccan Sahara for attending a ceremony marking the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

The event, held at the Chellah in Rabat on June 9, 2026, brought together Moroccan and international figures, with Buchan highlighting the importance of the Moroccan Sahara in transatlantic partnerships.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the ambassador expressed his honor in hosting leaders from Laâyoune and Dakhla, emphasizing their role in promoting peace and regional development.

The photo shared alongside his message featured Buchan with three prominent figures: Moulay Hamdi Old Errechid, president of the Laâyoune commune; Ynja El Khattat, president of the Dakhla Oued Eddahab regional council; and Sidi Hamdi Oild Errechid, president of the Laayoune Sakia El Hamra region.

During his address, Buchan reiterated America’s backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, aligning with King Mohammed VI’s initiative to position the region as a hub for transatlantic cooperation and economic opportunities.

He underscored the deep-rooted historical ties between the two nations, stating, “This partnership, forged in history and strengthened by trust, looks toward the next 250 years, driving economic and human connections between our peoples.”
