Bénin and EU strengthen ties with new cooperation priorities

On June 24, Beninese President Romuald Wadagni concluded a productive working visit to Brussels, Belgium, where he engaged in high-level discussions to formalize a revitalized partnership between Benin and the European Union (EU). This initiative aims to address evolving development challenges and foster long-term collaboration.

During his visit, President Wadagni met with key EU leaders, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen, to outline a renewed framework for bilateral cooperation.

The meeting with António Costa focused on strengthening mutual trust and stability while aligning shared objectives. Both sides explored opportunities to deepen collaboration across critical sectors, reinforcing a relationship built on shared values and vision.

Discussions with Ursula Von Der Leyen centered on accelerating EU-Bénin cooperation, with a focus on three strategic priorities. The first priority is economic transformation and innovation, emphasizing industrialization, job creation, and the expansion of the Port of Cotonou’s economic corridors. Key initiatives include local agricultural processing, youth vocational training, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The second priority addresses territorial development and security in northern Benin. This includes targeted investments in local infrastructure and economic opportunities to counter violent extremism and strengthen community resilience.

The third priority revolves around sustainable finance, particularly through the Global Green Bond Initiative. This mechanism aims to mobilize funding for sustainable infrastructure in renewable energy, transport, and agriculture, aligning with Benin’s climate goals.

European Commission President Von Der Leyen highlighted Benin’s role as a key partner in West Africa, emphasizing the shared commitment to improving livelihoods and fostering inclusive growth. From Benin’s perspective, the partnership seeks to position the country as a regional hub for investment, connectivity, and economic progress.
