In a landmark diplomatic engagement, the President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, embarked on an official visit to Bamako, where he met with Mali’s leader, General Assimi Goïta, to deepen bilateral relations. This high-level encounter, held on 9 June 2026, laid the groundwork for a sweeping overhaul of cooperation between the two West African nations, culminating in the adoption of strategic resolutions.
A new chapter in regional integration
The summit sent a clear message about the commitment of Bénin and Mali to regional cohesion at a time of shifting geopolitical realities in West Africa. Welcomed with full honors at the Koulouba Palace, President Wadagni and General Goïta engaged in extensive discussions described by both governments as warm and highly productive.
Boosting trade and economic ties
The revitalization of economic exchanges stood at the forefront of negotiations. Recognizing the pivotal role of the Port of Cotonou in supplying Mali, the two heads of state agreed to ramp up bilateral trade. To formalize these commitments, they announced the immediate reactivation of the Grande Commission mixte Bénin-Mali, with a second session scheduled to finalize economic agreements and streamline the movement of goods and investments.
Uniting against security threats
Security cooperation also featured prominently as Bénin and Mali pledged to enhance joint efforts in combating terrorism and organized crime across the Sahel-Saharan belt. In a joint declaration, both leaders reaffirmed their unwavering stance on sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference—principles they view as essential to safeguarding their nations’ strategic autonomy on the global stage.
The delegations underscored the deep historical ties uniting their peoples, with Bénin’s representatives emphasizing, “Our destinies are intertwined by history. Today, we are writing a new chapter rooted in mutual respect and co-development.”
Cultural exchange and future engagements
Beyond policy and economics, the summit prioritized cultural diplomacy and people-to-people connections. In a gesture of goodwill, President Wadagni extended a formal invitation to General Goïta for a state visit to Cotonou, an offer that was accepted. The visit’s dates will be determined through diplomatic channels, further cementing the momentum of this new partnership.
This Bamako meeting marks a pivotal moment in West African diplomacy, demonstrating that even amid regional shifts, pragmatic cooperation remains a cornerstone of stability and progress.
