Bénin and Niger leaders unite to boost bilateral ties
The Presidents of Bénin and Niger, Romuald Wadagni and Abdourahamane Tiani, reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation, with a focus on security and economic growth.
On June 2, 2026, Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni paid an official friendship and working visit to Niamey, Niger, where he was greeted by his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, at Diori Hamani International Airport. The warm reception reflected the strengthening bonds between the two nations.
Following the ceremonial welcome, the two heads of state held a private meeting at Niamey’s presidential palace. This was followed by an expanded working session with delegations from both countries, focusing on shared priorities and regional challenges.
The joint communiqué issued after the talks highlighted the deep historical ties of friendship and cooperation between Bénin and Niger. Both leaders underscored their determination to further strengthen bilateral relations to meet the shared aspirations of their populations for peace, security, and development.
Security concerns dominated the discussions. With ongoing terrorism threats across the Sahel and West Africa, both presidents reaffirmed their resolve to join forces against violent extremism and cross-border crime. They emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration to safeguard stability and advance development initiatives in the region.
The two leaders also agreed to expand cooperation across political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres. A key outcome was the decision to reopen the Bénin-Niger border, which has faced restrictions. A joint expert committee has been tasked with identifying existing barriers and proposing solutions within two weeks.
At the end of the visit, President Tiani expressed his appreciation for President Wadagni’s visit, while President Wadagni praised the warm hospitality. The Bénin leader extended an official invitation to President Tiani to visit Bénin, an offer gratefully accepted. The details of the return visit will be arranged through diplomatic channels, signaling both nations’ shared commitment to a stronger strategic partnership.
