The Beninese healthcare landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, formally accepted a shipment of 600 advanced oxygen concentrators. This initiative aims to bolster the emergency response capabilities of 23 medical facilities throughout the nation.
Modern technology to protect lives
Procured by UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this medical equipment represents a total investment exceeding 205,450 USD (approximately 116 million CFA francs). These “10LPM single flow” devices are designed to provide a continuous and reliable supply of oxygen, which is essential for treating patients suffering from respiratory distress.
This massive distribution focuses on 23 hospitals and clinics located in the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.
A major step in reducing maternal and infant mortality
According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is more than a technical upgrade; it is a core component of a national strategy to lower maternal, neonatal, and child mortality rates. During the ceremony, he emphasized that the availability of oxygen is a critical necessity, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring all citizens have access to high-quality healthcare regardless of their location.
Strengthening international health cooperation
The handover event featured the Chinese Ambassador, His Excellency Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Mr. Ousmane Niang. Ambassador Zhang praised the strong ties between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing support for the local health sector.
Meanwhile, the UNICEF representative noted that these devices—funded by individual donors in China—will significantly enhance the resilience of Benin’s health infrastructure when facing life-threatening emergencies. This upgrade of technical platforms across the country reinforces the government’s continuous efforts to modernize public health services and improve overall performance.
