Benin’s ecological commitment: youth lead the charge in reforestation efforts

Bénin is significantly advancing its policy for restoring forest landscapes. This Monday, June 1, 2026, the Hêkandji Public Primary School in the commune of Tori-Bossito served as the focal point for the 42nd observance of the National Tree Day. This pivotal event officially inaugurated the national reforestation campaign for the 2026-2027 period.

This year’s celebration, a tradition since 1985 and concurrently observed across all twelve departments of the nation, adopted the inspiring theme: «Children, forest ambassadors committed to a verdant Bénin». It signifies a profound strategic shift, positioning the younger generation at the forefront of climate action.

A unified national effort for the climate

The gathering manifested as a genuine collective commitment to environmental preservation. Political and administrative dignitaries, senior forestry officials, local elected representatives, development partners, and civil society converged, united by a singular objective: to reverse the trajectory of land degradation and ensure the sustainable restoration of the country’s vegetation cover.

For the organizers, the selection of an educational institution for this national launch was a deliberate choice. It underscores the Béninese State’s determination to embed principles of eco-citizenship from an early age. By assuming the mantle of «Ambassadors of Forests», the schoolchildren of Tori-Bossito, and by extension, all Béninese youth, are entrusted with a national mission: to nurture young saplings and disseminate sound environmental practices within their communities.

Reforestation for the future: the 2026-2027 campaign challenges

As climate change exacerbates agricultural and water challenges across the sub-region, this new reforestation campaign assumes critical importance. Beyond the symbolic act of planting the initial saplings on June 1, authorities and forestry services underscored the imperative of sustained monitoring and diligent maintenance.

The active engagement of local communities and the unwavering support from technical and financial partners will be decisive factors in ensuring an optimal survival rate for the newly planted trees.

Through this 42nd edition, Bénin unequivocally reaffirms its international obligations in combating desertification, demonstrating that the ecological transition is an immediate reality, propelled by a youth ready to embrace the challenge of a green future.
