President Ibrahim Traoré outlines conditions for return of exiles
In a significant political announcement, Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has addressed the matter of citizens currently living in exile. In a clear and resolute message, the President declared that the nation remains open to all its people, while firmly rejecting any form of impunity.
The Burkinabè leader expressed willingness to welcome back citizens residing abroad, including those who fled the country under suspicion of involvement in criminal or sensitive matters. However, this gesture of reconciliation is accompanied by an uncompromising requirement: strict adherence to ongoing or future judicial proceedings.
A commitment to justice without exception
President Traoré sought to dispel any ambiguity regarding the executive’s stance on judicial affairs. The voluntary return of an exile to Burkina Faso will not grant automatic amnesty or halt any legal proceedings against them.
« A return does not absolve one of accountability before the law, » stated a senior official within the transitional government.
The Head of the Transition reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding the principle of separation of powers, emphasizing that no directives will be issued to judicial authorities to interfere with, dismiss, or reduce charges against any individual.
Balancing national unity and legal accountability
The transitional authorities’ approach reflects a dual objective:
- Strengthening national cohesion: By ensuring no citizen is permanently excluded from the republic and enabling those who wish to return to do so.
- Upholding the rule of law: By affirming that legal accountability applies uniformly to all citizens, irrespective of their status, political affiliation, or social background.
Political analysts monitoring Burkina Faso’s landscape view this official clarification as a decisive moment. Exiles who choose to return will face the consequences of their past actions before competent courts, within a judicial process the government pledges to maintain as independent and impartial.
