Diplomatic reinforcement: Burundi reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco’s Sahara stance
The Republic of Burundi has once again voiced its unconditional and steadfast backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including its claim over the entire Sahara region. This firm position was conveyed during a high-level meeting in Rabat between Burundian Foreign Minister Édouard Bizimana and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, as part of an official working visit to the Kingdom.
In a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of their talks, Bujumbura not only reiterated its alignment with Rabat’s diplomatic posture but also endorsed the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the sole credible and pragmatic solution to the decades-long regional dispute. The statement emphasized Burundi’s support for international efforts—particularly those led by the United Nations—to advance negotiations based on this proposal.
African solidarity strengthens Morocco’s diplomatic momentum
This endorsement from Bujumbura follows a pattern of growing African backing for Morocco’s Sahara policy. The Burundian delegation welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which they described as a landmark acknowledgment of the autonomy plan as a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political settlement under Moroccan sovereignty. The resolution’s passage has amplified Morocco’s diplomatic campaign to consolidate international support for its initiative.
The two ministers also discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation across economic, security, and developmental sectors, reinforcing the bonds between the two nations. Their discussions underscored the shared commitment to stability and progress in the Maghreb and beyond.
