Key discussions on deepening Morocco-United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) partnership took place in Addis Ababa this week, as senior officials from both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continental growth and integration.

High-level engagement in Addis Ababa

Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s ambassador and permanent representative to the African Union (AU) and UNECA, met with Claver Gatete, UNECA’s executive secretary, to explore ways of enhancing cooperation between the Kingdom and the Commission. The meeting underscored Morocco’s long-standing dedication to African unity and sustainable development across the continent.

Recognition of Morocco’s hosting role in Tanger conference

During the discussions, Mr. Gatete praised Morocco’s pivotal contribution to the 58th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, held in Tanger from March 28 to April 3. He commended the Kingdom’s ongoing support for UNECA’s initiatives, highlighting Rabat’s proactive role in advancing Africa’s economic agenda.

A model for technical and vocational education

The UNECA leader also lauded Morocco’s innovative approach to technical and vocational education and training (TVET), describing it as a leading example on the continent. He emphasized how this model seamlessly blends skill development, cutting-edge technologies—including artificial intelligence—and the evolving demands of industrialization. Mr. Gatete urged wider adoption of this framework across Africa to equip more nations with the tools needed to thrive amid rapid economic and technological shifts.

Long-standing partnership with UNECA

Since joining UNECA in 1958, Morocco has played an active role in the Commission’s efforts, contributing to regional cooperation and accelerating the continent’s economic integration through targeted programs and strategic initiatives.
